This is a list of features with pictures of Apple’s next mobile operating system – iOS 6. With over 200 new features, iOS 6 will take your device in entirely new directions.

iOS 6 Beta 1 and Beta 2
REVISED HOME SCREEN ICONS
Lets start with the thing you’ll see the most and thats the home screen. The Clock, Maps and Setting app icons are slightly revised and look more polished. The settings icon matches the new one found in Mountain Lion. I dont know if my eyes are playing tricks, but compared to the one on my iPhone 4, the camera app icon pops out alot more (the colours of it). By the release this fall, I am sure Apple will update the dock to match the new one found in Mountain Lion. Still no live icons though 😦
NEW KEYPAD (iPhone)
The keypad on iPhone is now white and silver which is awesome because it matches my white iPhone alot more ;). It actually looks pretty nice.
The App Store, iBooks Store and iTunes Stores have been redesigned and have a black bar at the top and bottom. Not sure how much I like this, but it seems ok. You can also update your apps without entering your password and now you aren’t returned to the homescreen when installing apps.
‘SHARE WIDGET’ IN NOTIFICATION CENTER
We didnt get many widgets in iOS 6, but there is a new share widget for sharing to Facebook and Twitter in NC. Its actually called “Share Widget” in the settings for it.
SLIGHTLY REVISED MULTITASKING BAR
The orientation lock button is revised. Its more bold. Something very subtle but this is something no one mentioned or showed in videos. Heard of it once but never actually saw it.
ALL NEW SHARE OPTIONS SCREEN
When you share a picture or webpage (or anything else shareable) you’ll see this new share screen. Its now got icons instead of flat text. The centre icon changes the most.
REDESIGNED WEATHER APP
The weather app looks more solid and more professional as it looses it’s old design and faces the sky alot more. There are no more stripes. Apple is really going for the clean look with this one.
ALL NEW MAPS APP
The most exciting feature and possibly the feature that has everyone waiting. Apple has let go of poor Google’s hand in marriage and built their own mapping system from the ground up. Its got turn by turn navigation and a cool 3D mode. Turn by turn navigation with voice feedback is only available on the iPhone 4S and new iPad. Devices with A4 processor and iPhone 3GS do not have the 3D mode at all.
NEW SETTINGS APP
When you open settings in iOS 6, you’ll notice that options are in different places. Kinda confusing, but really organised compared to how it was before. Notice how Bluetooth is now in the main page. They’d rather take it out than make a separate widget for it in Notification Centre? Really? Come on Apple.
FULL SCREEN SAFARI
When you rotate Safari in landscape, you now get a full screen button. Scott Forstall said that this was to “take full advantage of that large retina display”. Did he hint at a larger iPhone screen? The current iPhone does not have a “large” screen, but it is beautiful.
UPDATED CAMERA APP
The camera app now has a black bar which is the opposite of the iPad camera app which got a translucent bar in iOS 5. Consistency much?
COLOUR CHANGING STATUS BAR
The status bar now changes colour based on the app you’re using. So far it only happens with Apple’s apps.
NEW FEATURES FOR SIRI ON iPhone 4S
Countries outside of the US will LOVE the new Siri features. We finally have traffic and maps working in Siri which makes the experience alot better. Makes me use Siri alot more.
SIRI FOR THE NEW iPad
Probably the best feature of iOS 6 for the new iPad owners is Siri. It should have been there at launch of the new iPad but the wait is almost over. Its working pretty well on my new iPad. Now, just when does the iPod touch get Siri?
NEW TAB SCREEN IN SAFARI
In Safari, you are no longer taken to the end of the list when you open a new tab. New tabs now open next to the current one.
Siri GET’S MORE LANGUAGES
Now Siri works in more counties, providing maps, traffics and service to countries outside of the US. Finally you can say “I’m Hungry” and Siri will find local restaurants. Siri also speaks alot more – when you ask it a sum, it now reads the answer to you instead of just; “OK, Here you go”. Very useful.
Siri now knows more languages. What ever your language, Siri will serve you.
Have a tab open on Safari or another iOS device? You can now wirelessly access your open tabs from any iOS or Safari device
BRAND NEW ‘PASSBOOK’ APP
This is a new app by Apple in iOS 6. It lets you hold your tickets on your phone and gives you coupons when you are near a store that has one. This app can be put into a folder (unlike that annoying Newsstand app from iOS 5). This app hints at an NFC chip in the next iPhone. Apple will want to use it to complete with Google Wallet. Passbook is currently not fully enabled in the iOS 6 beta’s.
NEW MUSIC APP
The standard music is not completely redesigned, but it takes some inspiration from the new keypad and adds a white colour scheme. The interface is also updated with metal looking controls (below).
MUSIC APP FEATURE
This was so subtle, I decided to make a seperate paragraph for it. When you are using the Music app, and you tilt your device, the new round buttons look like they reflect in the light. Its just making use of the sensors, but its pretty cool. The silverness reminds me of the metal around the actual iPhone.
INSERT PICTURES AND VIDEOS STRAIGHT FROM MAIL
Before iOS 6, you had to email a person pictures through the Photos app. Now, you can hold your finger down on a blank email and choose ‘Insert Photo or Video’. Its the last option. Its still not too convient because you have to dig paste the cut, copy and paste options before reaching it. Its a nice addition though. I would have preffered a camera icon somewhere instead.
NEW WALLPAPERS IN iOS 6
In each new version of iOS, there are some new wallpapers added to the iPhone. In iOS 6, there are 3 new wallpapers, but they seemed to have removed the Mona Lisa and The Blue Marble (Earth) wallpapers. Perhaps it was to keep the system size small or just to keep things simple. The 3 new wallpapers are at the top .
LATE NIGHT MODE
This feature is appearing on and off some devices. Sometimes it appears on the iPhone 4, sometimes on the iPod Touch 4G, and sometimes on the iPad. Its probably a bug that’s keeping it from appearing properly on all devices, but its a neat addition. When you choose this option in the settings, it tones down the bass of your music and makes it more suitable for a night time environment. I havn’t tried it out but I heard its working great.
iOS 6 BETA 3 features and improvements
NEW FEATURES IN MAIL
When sending a message in Mail, you can see a list of people you recently sent Mail to. I have also noticed that Mail sends email alot faster – even with many pictures attached. The whoosh sound plays instantaneously now. Something we will have to see later for sure. The 4th generation iPod touch now has VIP lists (why wasn’t it there at the same time as the iPhone?).
MAPS GETS SETTINGS
There is a new option in Settings for Maps. You can change the navigation volume levels from it (like the volume buttons don’t do that?). There’s also the option for miles or kilometres, and some other settings. They are really serious about the new mapping huh? :). These setings only appear on the iPhone 4S.
MORE MAPS INTERFACE TWEAKS
Apple didn’t stop there with Maps. They have updated the Maps to include a new Train Station icon and a new Apple Store icon.
MINOR PRIVACY UPDATE
Probably something you don’t really care about (but its good to have it) – now there are small pictures (glyphs) in the new Privacy settings.
@me.com CHANGES TO @icloud.com
Apple is moving away from MobileMe even more by changing the default @me.com email address to an @icloud.com one. You will be able to keep both email addresses and your messages will be sent to both. After iOS 6 releases, new users will only get the @icloud.com email with their Apple ID.
UNIFIED FaceTime AND iMessage SERVICES
Apple also unified the way iMessaging and FaceTime works. You can now also choose which email or number your iMessages or FaceTime calls start/come from. Your calls and messages will be pushed to all devices that you have set up in iOS 6. The iPad will ask you to enter your phone number when you start it up for the first time. And you can even choose your caller ID for FaceTime and iMessages.
LOCK SCREEN VOLUME
This might be an annoyance for some but now when you are listening to music (with or without headphones), and you change the volume, the screen will light up and show the volume bar. It’s something you will have to get used to but its definitely strange. This is not new in Beta 3, but I just included it here.
MORE Siri IMPROVEMENTS
Apple is really serious about Siri. There are now even more languages for Siri in settings – most notably; Spanish for the US, Mexico and Spain. Most of us will probably stick with English, but the new ones are awesome too! The new languages currently don’t work and Siri tells you that you can use Siri with that language soon. More Siri news down below!
Not sure if this is updated in beta 3, but there is alot more Emoji added to the built in Emoji keyboard. You can enable it in the Keyboard settings if you didn’t know 😉
SHARED PHOTOSTREAM (Added to 3GS too)
Shared Photostream allows you to create a Photostream that can be shared with friends or family. You decide which photos go in there, which is awesome! In iOS 6 Beta 3, the feature was added to the iPhone 3GS.
NEW ‘YOUTUBE’ APP FEATURE
Now you can ‘Load more’ in the Subscriptions part of the YouTube app. Before you could only see a handful of subscriptions. Something I’ve been wanting for a while. Also they appear in alphabetical order.
IPAD READING LIST PROGRESS BAR
On the iPad, there is a a progress bar for reading list. I think its showing the progress of web pages being saved offline or something.
“READING LIST”, “HISTORY” AND “BOOKMARKS” CHANGED TO GLYPHS
On the iPad, there are no more text labels in the options for reading list, history and bookmarks. They have been replaced with icons (glyphs).
Look’s like Apple really went to town with Siri in iOS 6. Seems like they have updated the replies Siri can give you and now Siri is more sarcastic and witty than ever. The new Replies are actually pretty nice and you now have abetter chance of getting a funny answer. I asked Siri to “sing me a song” and Siri sang “If I only had a brain” from the Wizard of Oz. Cool eh? I asked the same questions in beta 2 of iOS 6 and didn’t get these ‘new replies’. I’m sure there are many more too! Here are a few of my favourites.
ENTERING YOUR PASSWORD IS SO YESTERDAY
It has been confirmed. You no longer need to enter your password to download and install apps. At first, this only applied to updates but now it’s applied throughout the App Store. In iOS 5 and before, you could enter your password once and download many apps within 15 minutes before asked to enter it again. In short – no more password entering. You will still be required to enter your password for paid apps and also in app purchases.
APP STORE IMPROVEMENTS
The App Store is the number one way to download beautiful apps. On each App page, you get to see photos of the App to see what it’s like. Now, if you tap on the photos, you enter a full screen view. It’s a small addition, but I thought I would mention it.
Just like the Apple Smart Cover rests on top of your iPad, the Smart Banner rests on top of your webpage. A Smart Banner is like an iAd which directs you to the website’s native App, if they have one, in the app store. Smart Banners are so smart that they can tell what you’re doing in the webpage and open it in the app. Really useful!
iOS 6 BETA 4 features and improvements
REMOVAL OF THE YOUTUBE APP
(The YouTube app is now available in the App Store. Click here for more details! 11/09/12)
Since 2007, the iPhone came blessed with a glorious YouTube app for all your video viewing. Apple’s contract with Google has ended and they did not go as far to renew it again. Instead, they just removed the App all together. Apple has promised a better app available in the app store soon. I think this is good because the YouTube app was getting really outdated.
BLUETOOTH FILE SHARING
Apps can now use bluetooth to exchange data. There is a new section in Privacy that shows you apps that have used bluetooth. Still no peer to peer transferring 😦
EVEN MORE DESIGN UPDATES TO APP STORES
The app store seems to be getting better all the time. The homepage now has a coverflow theme to it (more visible on the iPad) with a scrolling bar at the top. When searching for apps, you are now shown a card-like view instead of a list.
iOS 6 GM features and improvements
This version of iOS 6 will be the version customers will be using from 19th September.
FOUR NEW WALLPAPERS
There are 4 new wallpapers added to iOS 6 GM, giving users a total of 8 new wallpapers. They are pretty nice but they don’t make up for the removal of the globe wallpaper!
MORE 3D CITIES AND NEW 3D ICON
London, England is turning 3D and now you’ll see a second icon in 3D mode. It only appears when you enabled 3D and zoom in. It’s an icon of some buildings but you will still see the 3D button when you are zoomed out.
The iPhone 5 might be a pretty device but the new ‘Panorama’ option from it has also made its way to iPhone 4S too. You can find it in Camera>Options. It’s pretty neat.
LIMIT AD TRACKING OPTION IN ‘ABOUT’
A new option has been added in the About section and its to limit ad tracking basically.
I hope you enjoyed this look at some of the most noticable features in iOS 6. I think its a worthy upgrade so far. Please keep checking back for changes!
Everything is more snappy and overall its more polished than iOS 5, which was already an amazing update on its own.
iOS 6 is expected to release on 19th September 2012.
