WWDC 2013: What to Expect

Today, Apple announced WWDC 2013.

This is an Apple focused annual event where developers can come in and see the latest innovations in Apple software.

This year’s WWDC will be held from june 10th to 14th in San Francisco.

WWDC has been known for iOS announcements, iPhone announcements (iPhone 4 and earlier) and OS X announcements.

This year hasn’t been great for Apple. It’s been pretty good in sales, but we never heard from Apple since October 2012 – which ironically, was exactly 6 months ago.

What can we expect this year?

The latest version of OS X is expected to be announced. if you didn’t know, OS X 10.9 has been seen in some report logs in the past weeks. The version will be called “10.9” but we are unsure of the name Apple might give it. Apple usually goes for Cat names; last years being “Mountain Lion”.

What can we expect from 10.9? Here are a few of my predictions:

  • Siri – We are expecting the virtual assistant to make its way to the Mac in one form or the other. Whether or not it’s full blown Siri is yet to be seen.
  • Further UI improvements – Duh. Pretty OS looks pretty 😛
  • iLife and iWork suite update – Newer versions would be great!

We will no doubt see the latest version of iOS and that is iOS 7. We are expecting it to be amazing and a fresh experience compared to what we have right now. The invite shows a colourful background, which might hint that iOS is going to get an overhaul. Maybe it will have some new life. Who knows.

This ‘fresh’ feeling could come from widgets or some liveliness in the home screen. iPhone 5 gave Apple more space to play with, so we should expect Apple to utilise this extra space and make iOS more appealing! I love my iOS devices, but I want something cool to keep me interested. Samsung seems to be ahead of the game here, even though many of their features are gimmicks and Apple just gives you what you need.

Here are some of my predictions:

  • More Siri improvements – Siri can open apps and all, but why doesn’t she/he read out answers too?
  • Widgets – If not widgets, then something to keep me using Notification Centre.
  • Camera improvements – Let me change some more settings.. please Apple..
  • “Live Wallpapers” – Thats Google’s term, but should our wallpapers stay static? Understand if this doesn’t happen because of battery drainage.. blah blah..
  • Safari improvements – Why does’t the “best browser on a phone” have a unified search bar? Chrome for iOS has executed it fine, so can Safari. Apple will find a way to do it elegantly!
  • Reworked weather App – The new Yahoo! Weather app is amazing. Time to take some inspiration from there me thinks.
  • Do Not Disturb – When this is “on”, it lets notifications keep the LCD off, but what if I don’t want to be disturbed while using the phone? Please!

*You can expect to see full iOS 7 coverage with all beta features here on Imagine A World, just like iOS 6 last year!!*

The invite for this years WWDC has a reflection which looks like Roman numerals. Those numerals actually say “2013” but when you think of Roman numerals, doesn’t a watch or clock come to mind? And a square image with colours around it is sort of what it might be like.

Is Apple hinting at a smart watch? We can’t say for sure, but we know Tim Cook has hinted at it a little. We will see!

An “iWatch” isn’t really appealing to me at this point, and its not something I would want to own right now. My phone and my watch are two different things, and I use them both for different reasons. I don’t want my watch talking to my phone and vice versa. Seems really cool, but not for me right now.

What not to expect

Don’t expect any new hardware. Apple has already done all that. New Macs, iPhones, iPods and iPads were announced and released during the fourth quarter of 2012. Expect new products as we get closer to the fall!

What are you most looking forward to? (if anything)

iOS 6 – My Predictions

WWDC or the World Wide Developer Conference, is Apple’s week to shine in the world of everything software and hardware.

I’m not going to talk about iCloud, the Mac line, OS X Mountain Lion or about the new iPhone in the post because I think that’s been covered about 1000 times each week. We will see the new iPhone in October just the iPhone 4S! Let forget about it until then? 😆

If you asked me yesterday or a week ago wheather or not Apple would unveil iOS 6, I would have said “Maybe..”.

If you ask me today, I would say “Yes!” because there is now solid evidence of one of Apple’s topics.

Apple has put up some posters for iOS 6 around their campus and this kind of thing gets me excited! :). Note the new logo for iOS 6. Its a change from the bubbly ones 😉

iOS, if you didn’t know, is Apple’s platform for their mobile operating system. It’s found on the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. There have been 5 major iterations of iOS and the next one gets unveiled on Monday.

I don’t know what iOS 6 will bring but this is what I’m hoping to see.

3D Maps – No More Google

This has been rumoured for a while before the leaked photographs began to show up. Google announced their version before Apple did which kinda confirms that Apple will certainly unveil their own. I’m hoping we get new 3D Mapping software to compete with Google’s new 3D maps on Android.

I also want to see some sort of widgets on the iPhone/iPod/iPad. iOS 5 brought out notification centre. A whole new way to see your notifications. It’s far from perfect, but its a great addition.

It would be great to see notification centre being used for more than just notifications. Turning Wi-Fi on and off (and more) from there would be a good addition.

Sure, I can jailbreak my phone to get these features but I shouldn’t have to.

Siri is an amazing start for what it is right now. Its a personal digital assistant that talks and listens to you. CEO of Apple, Tim Cook, said that ”users should stay tuned” when asked about improvments to Siri.

I really hope they open up the Siri API. Opening the API means that developers can have access to Siri when they want. For example, you could ask Siri to post a tweet, update a status, open an app or take a picture – without pressing any buttons. I thought they deeply intergrated twitter in to the OS in iOS 5, so why I can’t I tweet with Siri?

It would be cool if they added more commands to Siri such as ‘reduce brightness’, ‘bluetooth on/off’ and more.

Finally, it would be amazing if they took that beta tag off Siri, but something tells me that they will launch a full blown Siri app for the next iPhone before they do that.  There is also speculation that Siri will be brought to the 3rd generation iPad. It would further improve the selling points for the new iPad. That would amazing too.

These are my top features for iOS 6. I’m also expecting some clean-up around the OS itself, just as iOS 5 did which should make the overall experience smoother than ever! Don’t forget, you will be able to download iOS 6 over-the-air from your current iOS 5 devices.

I am uber excited for iOS 6 and can’t wait to see what features lay in wait! The event takes place at 10AM PST thats 6PM GMT.

iOS 6 is expected to debut a release with the new iPhone in October. That sounds about right because it’s what happen last year.

But lets take a moment to think about what we wont see at the conference. Steve Jobs. He surely was a genious beyond anything in the world and after his passing away, he still lives on in the form of these gadgets we can’t live without.

It will be the first major Apple event where he will not be present. May he rest in peace.

What’s on your wishlist? If you have an Android device, what are you favourite features for it?

I saw the retina display on the new iPad…

Apple is known for innovation such as the iPod in 2001, the iPhone in 2007 and the iPad in 2010.

They recently released the iPad 3 the new iPad and it packs their amazing retina display. Yeah, I know that thing is like 2 months old now, but I only saw it in person today.. 😆

I have a 2 retina display devices, the iPhone 4S and iPod touch but nothing as beautiful or as big as the iPad! I saw it today at the Apple Store and OMG. It was truly magical!

Apple says that the retina display on the new iPad has 1 million more pixels than a HDTV. I didnt believe this and thought it was just big talk, but after looking at the display – it seems true.

You can’t discern the individual pixels. Its REALLY good. No one has created a display better than the retina display and I don’t think they will! I’m wanting to go check it out again 😆

Have you seen the new iPad’s retina display?

On a site note, WWDC is due to take place for one week starting 11th June. They are most likely going to show off iOS 6 – which I am REALLY excited about. I just love new software and hardware. I mean it can only get better, right?
